Just so you don’t think that making fun of hats is a recent development here is a treasure that Jill found on YouTube. It’s Spike Jones and his City Slickers singing a satirical tribute to Hedda’s crazy hats. Who’s he to talk though? Look at those boys’ suits?! Also I get a kick out of seeing the hats in the audience. Those were the days!
By 1939 Hedda Hopper was a famous Hollywood gossip columnist and her trademark was her nutty hats. That’s also Hedda at the end of The Women in the butterfly gown by Adrian, antenna hat by Mr. John. If you love hats but haven’t seen this movie rent or buy it and treat yourself. It’s a millinery goldmine.
I met Mr. John in New York as we lived on the same street and one day he admired a hat I was wearing. We chatted several times in the late 80s and he remarked that hats are passé. Well, we all know that everything comes back eventually. Will we ever dress like we mean it again? I wonder.
Thanks, Jill.
