I guess Colorado is getting all of our snow (sigh). It’s been warmer here but it turned into a millinery kind of day for me. I stepped out of our building this afternoon wearing my black faux fur toque and then spotted the nicest hat I’ve seen in St. Gallen so far! I really, REALLY wanted to pull out my camera to snap a picture of it but thought it would just be too rude. Besides, the stern look on this elegant lady told me she’d already had too many stares. It happens here.
This lady wore a long grey cashmere shawl-collared coat with a small wine velour cloche. That is, a close fitting hat that covers the ears. The hat was brimless but self trimmed with two flowers of the same wine colored velour. What made it really interesting was that the flowers were very large, double petalled and on both sides of the head rather than the traditional right side. It was a showstopper and definitely not a manufactured hat.
Later, I stepped into a department store to see if the pheasant feathers I’d spotted while Christmas shopping were on sale (they were not). I wandered up to the Weinachtschmuck department and found a few things for 50% off including this pretty little flower ornament to clamp on our tree. I bought it to use the idea for a hat trim. It’s nearly weightless with lots of dancing movement - just perfect for a fun hat. Guess I’m getting the design itch again because I bought a couple of placemats yesterday that I plan to transform into a hat as well.
For Jill, here is my Christmas Daphne made of a polyester quilted fabric that is machine embroidered (probably Swiss Stickerei). I was looking for a textured wool but settled for this as it was the right color. The fabric was not cheap at 42 CHF a meter. I lucked into the ribbon for the rose in the gift wrap section of a housewares store. Serendipity!
