Our friend Carrie found a deal on a limo and got us organized for a Virginia winery tour on Saturday. It was loads of fun! There are over 200 wineries in Virginia these days and the wines are getting better all the time. We hit only two of them Saturday but that was enough for plenty of hilarity.
Imagine our surprise (and glee!) when our limo showed up - a Hummer! I’ve always thought these vehicles are ridiculous except for military use and this variation is certainly the most hilarious of all.
It was comfortable ride tho’ and driver Steve took good care of us. We enjoyed mimosas, champagne and snacks while Steve took care of the driving.
Our first stop was Tarara Winery located on the Potomac within sight of Sugarloaf Mountain. Carrie had planned ahead and had coupons for all of us for a free tasting and discounts on anything we bought.
My favorite here was a 2009 Cabernet Franc which will accompany our Thanksgiving celebration.
Kathy is testing the quality of the Riedel glasses.
Head ‘em up and move ‘em out! We’d spent so much time admiring the art, the wines and the glasses that we realized we only had time for one more winery. No problem!
Last stop was La Grange Winery located in a 19th century Virginia house.
Tastemaster Kathy led us through a lengthy list of tastings. It seems that Viognier and Cabernet Franc are the best of the Virginia wines we tried. Nevertheless, I was inspired to buy a bottle of Snort, it’s like a Port but since it’s not made in Portugal they had to come up with another moniker. Think I’ll save this for an after-dinner treat for my next dinner party. Wonder if it will taste as good as I remember? One does lose some discretion by the end of a tasting day.
Happy Thanksgiving, All !!!
